5 Essential Iaido Sword Techniques Every Beginner Should Know

1️⃣ Nukitsuke (抜刀 / 抜き付け) — Drawing Cut

Key Movements:

  • One hand pulls the scabbard, the other draws the sword
  • The first strike is completed the moment the blade leaves the scabbard (horizontal/diagonal cut)

Characteristics: The most iconic movement in Iaido; “Draw and cut as one”—a symbol of speed and focus.

2️⃣ Kesa-giri (袈裟斬り) — Diagonal Cut

Cutting Path:

  • A diagonal cut from top to bottom, shoulder to waist (a “/” shaped trajectory)

Characteristics: Traditional combat cut; elegant, fluid, and visually powerful.

3️⃣ Kiri-otoshi (斬り下ろし) — Vertical Downward Cut

Cutting Path:

  • From high guard above the head, cutting straight down along the body’s centerline

Characteristics: Direct expression of power; one of the most fundamental attacks.

4️⃣ Tsuki (突き) — Thrust

Key Movements:

  • Straight-line thrust with a stable tip
  • Body must align with the centerline

Characteristics: Fast, precise, and lethal; used as a finishing or controlling technique.

5️⃣ Nōtō (納刀) — Returning the Sword

Key Points:

  • Blade spine rests against guiding thumb; tip aligns with scabbard opening
  • Insert smoothly and steadily with full control
